Cheyenne Autumn(John Ford) 1964 **** 7/12/2016

Cheyenne Autumn follows the Cheyenne on a 1200 mile flight North to their homeland away from the arid reservation they’ve been herded into.  They’re followed by Capt. Archer(Richard Widmark) turning increasingly sympathetic.  So too is the portrayal of this tragic march, and on the balance it’s a moral Western.  Jimmy Stewart takes a comic turn as Wyatt Earp, satisfying as ever.  Karl Malden too as German Capt. Wessels, presiding over slaughter and betrayal at Fort Robinson, with unforgettable wild broken eyes stumbling out of the gates after the worst has happened.
