The sex in the picture is as incidental as the great jazz score. It seems to penetrate the screen lazily, but it’s deliberate and well-arranged. A well dressed Marlon Brando and a well dressed young girl(Maria Schneider) begin an erotic experience in a huge walk up apartment. The photography of the nudity is lush, and the whole movie feels very warm. The acting from the two leads is really great; Brando speaks decent French, and Schneider comes off as very attractive. It’s a sad movie at many points & at its conclusion, but it’s also very funny, from its sly ribbing of the passionate young filmmaker(Jean-Pierre Léaud), to Brando’s wonderful English accent and witty patter.
