Foreign Correspondent(Alfred Hitchcock) 1940 **** 5/4/2016

Hitchcock’s movies often have their tone set by their leads, and in this one Joel McCrea is as amiably brash and American playing crime reporter John Jones on eve of war assignment to Europe as the movie is.  He comes over a European assassination cum dead man alive cum kidnapping plot that has him licking his chops for the story.  Along the way he’s assisted by English quite correspondent ffolliott(George Sanders), and falls in love with Peace Party debonair Carol Fisher(Laraine Day), whose father Stephen(Herbert Marshall) has a hand in the curious case of Van Meer(Albert Basserman).  The action sequences are done to genuine perfection, particularly the engine-screaming airplane crash into a roiling ocean below.
