The Revenant(Alejandro G. Iñáratu) 2015 **** 1/12/2016

DiCaprio plays Hugh Glass in this grueling film.  Attacked by a bear and left for dead, his son(Forest Goodluck) killed by Fitzgerald(Tom Hardy), and abandoned too by Bridger(an underwhelming Will Poulter, not forgetting I wanted that role).  He drags himself, and the movie is placidly vicious throughout.  On est tous des sauvages.  Hardy stumbles around masculinely, but this is Fitzgerald.  DiCaprio is grit.  The final fight between the two is shot with clarity and violence by CO P. Scott Sabatame.  Emmanuel Lubeski gives us poignant painted images and captures the wild and savagery of the Frozen North.  We should thank Iñáratu for it, but it’s really from God’s hands.
