The Hidden Fortress(Akira Kurosawa) 1958 **** 2/9/2016

Toshiro Mifune plays scowling, honorable Makabe, escorting Princess Yuki(Aisa Uehara) after their clan, Akisuki, is near broken by the Yamana.  He runs into two peasants, Tahei and Matashichi, who have found the Akisuki’s hidden gold, and have a plan to sneak through the Yamana’s lines to safe Hawakaya.  It’s an adventure, and it feels so alive and real.  The camera is capturing images from feudal Japan, and Mifune is a general.  There’s a crisp, western photography to this down to earth Samurai drama, and a moral gravity; let’s call it an Eastern.
