The Barretts of Wimpole Street(Sidney Franklin) 1934 **** 1/13/2016

A very light-hearted drawing-room romance with stabs of weight from Charles Laughton as Elizabeth Barrett’s(Norma Shearer) overbearing father.  Maureen O’Sullivan is charming as her sister Henrietta and Frederic March is a charismatic, voluble Robert Browning.  Laughton is cruel and possibly incestuous, but the film ends happily with the couple marrying, Elizabeth transformed into a defiant leader in her fearful family.  The dog Flush gives a great performance, genuinely.
