Rope(Alfred Hitchcock) 1948 **** 3/15/2016

Phillip(Farley Granger) & Brendan(John Doll) strangle David, an old school chum just to see how it would feel, and for art.  They toss their buddy into a chest and then throw a tablecloth over it, and a dinner party with guests including David’s father and aunt, David’s flame, and Reginald, their nihilistic old schoolteacher, played amiably by Jimmy Stewart.  The film is like a photographed play, with a roving camera moving with surety when needed and with hesitancy when not.  The cuts are few and far between, noticeable if you look for them but the only explicit one a reaction from Stewart, who gives a great performance, as does everyone.
