Animal Crackers(Victor Heerman) 1930 **** 12/27/2015

This stage musical farce is brought to the big screen with the talents of the Marx brothers and Lillian Roth, who plays Mrs.Rittenhouse’s(Margret Dumont) daughter Arabella.  A painting by Bogard is brought at the same time Jeffrey Spaulding(G. Marx) returns from Africa.  Two separate plots to replace the painting with copies by a set of heiresses(Margret Irving & Kathryn Reece) for fun, and by Arabella and her painter boyfriend John Parker(Hal Thompson) lead to high zaniness.  At its most inspired when Spaulding riffs muscularly(with the famous elephant in pajamas line), we’re also treated to a cute singing duet from Thompson and Roth, and a truly transporting harp performance from Harpo.
